How to write resumes that get you noticed - In the world of job hunting, you are your own brand and your resume is your advertisement. So how do you best promote yourself to hiring managers to land the job you like?
Here are some top tips to resume tweaks, as suggested by media Lisa Johnson Mandell on her article published on Forbes.com.
- Age-proof your job bio. In the minds of young human resources people, sentences like “more than 25 years of experience” means wrinkles and gray hairs. Mention your skills and job highlights instead.
- Include only experience relevant to the job. There is nothing wrong with omitting work experience. The only work experience a potential employer cares about is what you’ve done to show you are fit for the role.
- Leave out college or high school graduation date. But do mention that you graduated from college and what you majored in, or if you did not attend college, that you finished high school.
- You don’t have to mention your birthday. Some people list this at the top of their resume, under their name and address. You don't really need to emphasize how old you are.
- Delete career objective. Most employers are not interested in your personal goals. They just want to know whether you would be perfect for the role they are looking to fill.
- Have a Career Summary. List your best accomplishments, written with bullets right under your contact information.
- Don't emphasize gaps in between jobs. The best way is to not mention the exact dates that you began and ended certain jobs. Just convey the amount of time you spent on a relevant job, not specifically when you worked there.
- Try to keep your resume in a single page. Or at least keep it to a maximum of two pages. One way to keep your word limit down is to omit listing jobs that lasted less than six months.
- Don’t use vague words. Words like “can-do attitude”, “problem solver” or “outstanding people skills” are not precise and don't really say much about what you can do.
- Use fonts bigger than 10 points. You want hiring managers to read your resume comfortably, not squint through it.
- Put essentials right at the top. This means your name, phone number, email address and website or blog URL. In your employment history, make sure you point out accomplishments and achievements on the job.
- List any degrees and honors and work-related courses you’ve taken. You may leave off the dates.
- Interests and professional memberships. These set you apart and will show your potential employer that you are energetic and valuable.
- Label your resume. Make sure to save your resume with a title like "Lisa Johnson Mandell.doc” and not just simply “resume.doc”. This will help hiring managers differentiate your resume from those sent by other applicants. It also means you are savvy enough to properly label your resume.
