At the Zayed Charity Run in Erth, Abu Dhabi on November 23, 2024.
The Zayed Charity Run 2024 welcomed nearly 12,000 participants from around the globe to Abu Dhabi’s Erth venue on Saturday (November 23). Known as the “Run for Kindness,” the event celebrated its 23rd year by fostering community spirit while supporting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Sheikh Yas Bin Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan inaugurated the event with the starting gun for the challenging 10km race. Elite athletes competed fiercely for a prize pool of Dh1.5 million. Ethiopia’s Gemechu Diriba claimed the top spot in the 10km race, finishing in just 29 minutes and 19 seconds. The run brought together nearly 4,000 Emirati runners and international participants from countries like India, the Philippines, and Egypt. Notably, 2,000 children from over 115 schools participated, along with a 77-year-old runner who inspired many. The event offered diverse routes to accommodate all abilities, from a fun-filled 3km family track to a 5km intermediate course and the 10km competitive race. Those with disabilities also competed in handbike, wheelchair, and paracycling categories, showcasing extraordinary determination. This year’s proceeds will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, empowering individuals with MS through research and support. “This run exemplifies our mission to use sports as a force for good,” said Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. “It’s a celebration of fitness, philanthropy, and community spirit.” The Zayed Charity Run, which began in 2001, continues to grow as a global symbol of humanity, with editions held in the US and Egypt. The event is organized under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and supported by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
