The wait is finally over. The Zayed National Museum, a long-anticipated cultural landmark dedicated to the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, will officially open its doors to the public on December 3, coinciding with the final day of the Eid Al Etihad holiday. In a video announcement, the Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed the date, describing the museum as the “beating heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District” — a global hub for art, science, and heritage that already includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi and will soon welcome the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Natural History Museum. The Zayed National Museum will celebrate Sheikh Zayed’s visionary leadership, his dedication to education and environment, and his role in uniting the nation. Through six permanent galleries and rotating exhibitions, visitors will explore over 300,000 years of history — from prehistoric life in the Arabian Peninsula to the UAE’s rapid rise as a global nation. Inside, more than 2,500 artifacts will be displayed, including some of the oldest natural pearls in the world, a recreation of the Hili Grand Tomb, and cultural treasures from around the globe that highlight the UAE’s role as a crossroads of civilization. “This is more than a museum — it’s a story of who we are,” said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. “As the national museum of the UAE, sitting at the heart of Saadiyat Cultural District, Zayed National Museum presents the story of our land, our people, and our heritage in a way that is alive, evolving, and open to all.” He added, “The museum reflects the vision and values of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose belief in culture, education, and knowledge continues to guide us. In opening these doors, we reaffirm our commitment to culture as a source of knowledge, connection, and inspiration for generations to come.”

Designed to inspire generations

Architecturally, the museum is a masterpiece. Designed by Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, it features five soaring steel structures that resemble the wings of a falcon — a powerful symbol of Emirati heritage and Sheikh Zayed’s lifelong passion for falconry. These towers, standing between 83 and 123 meters high, double as solar thermal chimneys, combining sustainability with symbolism. The structure spans 72,441 square meters and carries an estimated project value of $679 million. Construction began in 2019. Visitors will encounter two expansive ground-level galleries, four pod-shaped exhibition spaces suspended above an atrium, a 30-meter observation mound offering panoramic views of the Saadiyat Cultural District, and a 400-meter landscaped narrative garden illustrating key moments in Sheikh Zayed’s life. With its opening, the Zayed National Museum becomes the flagship institution of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District — joining Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and the Abrahamic Family House. The museum will also offer hands-on learning experiences for children, accessible design for people of determination, and research spaces connecting scholars and artists across the world through science, storytelling, and heritage.
