Abu Dhabi begins new bus fare, transport passes

Standard bus fares in Abu Dhabi are now set at Dh2 as the emirate rolled out its new public transport fare system on Wednesday (February 28). The price covers the minimum fare, with an additional 5 fils to be applied for every kilometer crossed. The maximum fare is capped at Dh5, according to the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). Commuters can also switch buses without paying an additional Dh2 boarding fee as long as they tap in to the other service within 60 minutes of the last tap-out using the Hafilat card, and if the transfer is on a bus in the same direction of the journey. Commuters can avail of a maximum of two free transfers on up to three buses. Failure to tap the Hafilat card may result in fines and the deduction of the cost of the entire bus ride. Passengers are advised to tap their card on the reader when boarding and alighting from each bus.

Public transport passes

The ITC also updated the Public Transport Passes, with service to include city and suburb areas in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra (excluding intercity services). A 7-day pass now costs Dh35 while a 30-day pass costs Dh95. For Emiratis enrolled in the social support program, the 7-day pass costs Dh30 while the 30-day pass costs Dh80. Free annual passes will continue to be given to seniors and people of determination and one companion. Annual passes for students remain at Dh500. Public bus rides remain free for children aged 10 or younger. Passes issued before February 28 will remain valid until their expiration; it will be active within the city only in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra; and does not cover the suburbs areas.
