Abu Dhabi Police colonel who contracted Covid-19 shares experience

  ABU DHABI – Colonel Thuraya Ali Al Hashemi, Director of the Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police, clearly remembers the moment Covid-19 took its toll on her. Al Hashemi had contracted coronavirus in the line of duty. She had worked non-stop without a day off during the two-month period at the start of the outbreak. She spent seven days in the hospital, but her health had improved so much that she was able to work from her hospital room. After that, it was 14 days of home quarantine. Colonel Thuraya said her management urged her to take a few days break. “But I couldn’t. This was my duty,” she said. “But one day, a couple of weeks after I returned from quarantine, I collapsed on the office stairs,” she said. The accident didn’t deter Colonel Thuraya, who got up and went back to work on the frontline of Abu Dhabi Police’s Covid-19 fight. However, the fall injured her hand. “The pain was getting worse by the day,” she said. “So, after three weeks I went to a doctor who sent me for an X-ray and confirmed it was a bone fissure. She said I had to wear a splint, so I did, and I went back to work straight away.” Colonel Thuraya said she is proud to work with her team on the front line. “My team showed real dedication by working immediately on this issue and starting to implement the strategy in all sectors to protect every employee under GHQ facilities and the community at large,” she said.
