FDA investigates allergic reactions to Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine

  WASHINGTON – The US Food and Drug Administration said it is investigating reports of severe allergic reactions to the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, but said it can continue to be used without restrictions. The statement came after two healthcare workers developed allergic reactions in the UK, and two more healthcare workers in Alaska developed severe allergies, with one of the employees hospitalized. The FDA said it is closely monitoring these situations and is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate. Mass vaccination was rolled out in the US beginning on Monday. The coronavirus vaccine has passed safety reviews during months of clinical trials involving thousands of volunteers but recent incidents of sudden allergic response have sparked alarm. “While the totality of data at this time continue to support vaccinations under the Pfizer without new restrictions, these cases underscore the need to remain vigilant during the early phase of the vaccination campaign,” said FDA vaccine expert Doran Fink. “The FDA is coordinating with the CDC to further investigate the cases in the US, and to communicate our findings in a timely manner,” Fink said, adding that the data does not suggest that new restrictions on the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are required. In the US, 2.9 million doses are expected to be received by states, with more than 1.5 million doses already distributed by Thursday, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
