Dh20,000 fine, imprisonment for exploiting children in begging

The Public Prosecution (PP) has warned the general public against child exploitation in begging, following the multiple reports of the illegal practice during Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr holidays. Many residents have complained that women carrying infants and accompanying children under 12 years old are knocking at doors for money. Some of them even demanded more than Dh10. Due to the complaints received from various emirates, the PP has reiterated the law regarding the exploitation of children. According to federal law on Child Rights Law “Wadimah,” the perpetrator of this illegal act shall be punished with imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh20,000 or either of the two penalties. The law further explained that it is prohibited to exploit a child in begging or to employ a child in conditions contrary to the law or to assign a child to work that “impedes his education or harms his health or safety – physically, psychologically, morally, or mentally.” RZSP/Expat Media
