Clinical trial of Russia Covid-19 vaccine underway in Abu Dhabi

DUBAI – The clinical trial of Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, is now underway in Abu Dhabi, with health official looking to inoculate 500 volunteers. The vaccination trial is the second of its kind in Abu Dhabi and was first announced in December. The Sputnik V trial is open to 500 volunteers aged 18 and above. Participants must be Abu Dhabi residents and have not taken part in any Covid-19 vaccine trial. They must also have a healthy record in the past 14 days. Volunteers will receive two doses of the vaccine, 20 days apart. Participants will be monitored for 180 days after taking the vaccine. Volunteers can still register through v4v.ae. The clinical trials are being run by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, and supervised by the Ministry of Health and Prevention. The trial Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology and is believed to be 92 percent effective against coronavirus. In Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the vaccine trial, all 40 participants developed neutralizing antibodies against coronavirus. No “unexpected adverse events” were noted during the early trials. Earlier in 2020, Abu Dhabi also conducted clinical trials of Chinese-developed Covid-19 vaccine from Sinopharm. More than 30,000 volunteers were given a vaccine shot. The Sinopharm vaccine is now approved for public use in the UAE and is available for free across the country. ICA/Expat Media
