Covid-19 vaccination in UAE mandatory or optional?

  DUBAI – Vaccination against Covid-19 is currently happening in health centres across the UAE as authorities provided free vaccines for certain segments of the society. But is vaccination mandatory or optional? The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention said vaccination is optional. The first wave of vaccination involved senior citizens and frontliners, followed by employees in vital professions in the government sector. Employees whose jobs involve public interaction are being given priority in the first phase of vaccination. “In the first phase, Emiratis as well as residents above the age of 60 years, people of determination, people with chronic diseases, frontliners in the public and private sector and people in occupations with the highest Covid-19 risk are eligible. In the next phase, other segments of society will be eligible,” said Dr. Farida Al Khaja, CEO of Clinical Support Services and Nursing Sector at the DHA and Chairperson of the Covid-19 Vaccination Steering Committee. In a previous interview, Al Khaja said Dubai authorities are "targeting to vaccinate approximately 70 per cent of the population of Dubai by the end of 2021. We want to reach the herd immunity that is required”. Al Khaja said that Dubai will roll out its second phase of mass vaccination against Covid-19 in April, and that it will be open to all Emiratis as well as expatriates. Vaccination comprises of two doses, taken separately. The gap between the two doses is 21 days. In the UAE, two kinds of Covid-19 vaccine are available: The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for Dubai residents and the Chinese-developed Sinopharm vaccine for all UAE residents.
