Dubai has announced what officials describe as the world’s first AI-powered park design challenge, inviting innovators, designers, students and residents to help shape the future of public spaces through artificial intelligence. The initiative was approved by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as part of a broader package of urban development projects designed to strengthen quality of life and position Dubai as a global leader in smart city innovation. The challenge aims to use artificial intelligence throughout the planning and design process, while leveraging data analytics to better understand how communities use parks and public spaces. Public invited to help shape future parks Dubai Municipality said the competition will encourage participation from designers, urban planning specialists, university students, researchers, startups and technology innovators. Further details about registration for the competition are expected to be announced on Dubai Municipality's official social media accounts soon. The initiative seeks to generate creative ideas for future parks while supporting sustainable urban development and enhancing public wellbeing. One of the challenge’s unique features is its emphasis on community participation. Residents will have an opportunity to contribute ideas and feedback through AI-powered tools and interactive data platforms. Officials said the approach reinforces participatory design principles by making the public a key partner in shaping future urban spaces.

International experts and residents to choose winners

Winning entries will be selected through a collaborative process involving internationally renowned designers, senior Dubai Government officials and local residents. The challenge forms part of Dubai’s wider strategy to strengthen its urban innovation ecosystem and attract cutting-edge ideas that improve quality of life. “These new projects build on Dubai’s journey in developing innovative public spaces and urban facilities that enhance community engagement, support the creative economy, and elevate quality of life, further strengthening the emirate’s position as a leading global model in designing the cities of the future,” Sheikh Hamdan said. The announcement comes as Dubai Municipality expands its Urban Planning and Design Lab initiatives and increases collaboration with leading international architects.
