Dubai: Beware of fake Nol card recharge websites
Dubai residents have taken to social media to warn users of fake websites mimicking the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) Nol card recharge service. One of the victims to this scam said he lost more than Dh1,000 after going into the fake site to recharge his Nol card with Dh30. He said he did not suspect fraud since the website looked very similar to the RTA site. The bogus site has since been reported to the Dubai Police. Amid a rise in cybercrime, authorities have repeatedly advised residents to check the website address before giving out their personal and banking information. In the RTA's case, the official website is www.rta.ae. Last week, the RTA announced that it is increasing the minimum top-up for Nol cards to Dh20 starting on January 15. Currently, Nol cards can be topped up at RTA’s ticket vending machines or app for a minimum of Dh5. Meanwhile, the RTA is urging public transport users to be wary of scams involving Nol cards. "Be careful not to deal with deceptive marketing campaigns that aims to exploit digital service users. It involves the sale of fake Nol cards at token amounts, misleadingly topping up credit, and illicitly gathering customer data. RTA strongly advises exercising caution and vigilance when dealing with such campaigns by using RTA services only, such as the website (www.rta.ae), ticket offices, vending machines and (RTA Dubai and nol pay) applications," according to the RTA.
