Court grants mother child custody despite jail term

The Dubai court has granted the custody of a 10-year-old child to her mother despite the latter's jail sentence for stealing gold bars worth Dh160,000. In the records, the child's father demanded custody of his daughter after his ex-wife was sentenced to imprisonment for stealing gold bars worth Dh160,000 and Dh29,400 from his home. The court granted him custody. However, the mother appealed. The custody committee reviewed the mother's home, ensuring she could cater to her daughter's personal and educational needs. The court canceled the ruling and transferred custody to the mother. According to the report issued by the committee, the father lives with his sisters in a small apartment where he only sleeps in the hall. After hearing the custody committee's recommendation, the court ruled that the child should be in her mother's care, despite the woman's conviction. RZSP/Expat Media
