Dubai to launch self-driving ride-hail services

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Cruise, a self-driving technology company, have conducted data collection and road testing of the five Chevy bolt-based autonomous vehicles for traffic signals, signage, and driver behavior. Marking a fundamental step toward the launch of self-driving ride-hail services in the emirate, the transport strategy aims to strengthen Dubai’s global leadership in self-driving and develop its aspirations of becoming the world’s smartest city and enhance the well-being and safety of citizens, residents, and visitors. According to Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at the RTA, data collection and testing is a crucial phase in Dubai’s quest for excellence in smart mobility and advanced technology. He said that this strategy would ensure advanced generalizable AI and autonomous driving systems safety adapt to Dubai traffic conditions. The stage of data collection and testing for Dubai’s traffic environment of the five Chevy Bolt-based autonomous vehicles aims to obtain reading and data through onboard lidars, radars, and cameras to capture data and images within a 360-degree field vision, Bahrozyan explained. He added that the launch of autonomous vehicles would “positively impact” Dubai’s transportation landscape and well-being. Hence, it would integrate the transportation and communication systems in the emirate by streamlining the mobility of mass transit users and their arrival to their final destinations. RTA and Cruise collaborated to run the maiden autonomous taxi service in the city.
