Dubai: Three jailed, fined Dh4,000 for defrauding via fake dog deal

The Dubai Court of Misdemeanors convicted three individuals to three months in prison and fined them a total of Dh4,000. The court also ordered their deportation after defrauding Dh4,000 from an Asian through a fake deal selling a dog via an electronic platform. The incident started back in June of last year when an Asian complained that he had been scammed by someone who had advertised a puppy for sale on an online marketplace. The complainant claimed to have contacted the seller via WhatsApp, who showed him images and a video of the dog. He said they settled on Dh2,500 after haggling over the seller's initial demand of Dh3,000 for the dog. The seller then sent him his bank account number, and the requested amount was transferred. The seller promised to send the dog to him on the same day by a shipping company, but he did not receive it. He got in touch with him to find out why he wasn't shipping the puppy. The seller said he couldn't ship the dog out because of an emergency and advised him to wait. He then asked the buyer for an additional Dh8,000 as refundable insurance for the shipping company to deliver the dog. The complainant informed the seller that he did not have that amount, so the seller asked him to transfer Dh1,500 to another bank account. Immediately after the transaction, the buyer could no longer reach the seller's mobile. The buyer then realized he was tricked and reported the incident to the authorities. According to a police official, the investigative team identified the suspect and the account holders who received the money. All the suspects were arrested.
