Musk advances Twitter with AI despite development pause

Despite advocating for a pause in developing such technology, Elon Musk is progressing with an artificial intelligence project at Twitter, according to US media reports published on Tuesday (April 11). According to Insider, Musk has purchased tens of thousands of powerful, expensive processing processors and hired AI engineering talent. The Information, another tech-focused publication, claimed the entrepreneur had floated the notion of launching a ChatGPT competitor. Experts, including Musk, signed a letter calling for a pause in AI development less than two weeks before the Insider report. The Future of Life Institute's website posted an open letter recommending a six-month moratorium on creating potent AI systems. Academics and industry leaders, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak were among the signatories. They said that the pause should be utilized to strengthen regulation and guarantee the systems were secure. According to the Insider article, Musk's incipient AI project at Twitter involves teaching a language model to produce textual material. Although generative AI may be used as a search or advertising tool, the paper stated it was still unclear what Musk wanted its use at Twitter. OpenAI was founded by Musk, who later departed the firm in 2018.
