EU warns Twitter over spreading disinformation

Twitter has been warned by the European Union (EU) not to spread false information or support Kremlin policy. In a Twitter post, Vera Jouriva, the Vice-President for Values and Transparency at EU, tweeted that this is yet another “negative sign from Twitter on not making digital information space any safer and free from disinformation and malicious influence.” She highlighted an AP report on research by the London-based non-profit Reset, which discovered that recent Twitter rules changes had greatly accelerated state-sponsored misinformation on the site by authoritarian governments in Russia, China, and Iran. "To me, this is a signal that #Twitter is falling short of its commitments to the anti-disinformation Code," she said. "This is a paramount test to show they are serious about respecting the Code and ultimately compliance with the #DigitalServicesAct," Jourova added. Major social media platforms must comply with the DSA's requirements to mitigate systemic risks like misinformation, or they risk fines of up to 6 percent of their annual global revenue. By August of this year, the EU DSA expects the social media platforms to have adopted a code of conduct, maintained independent auditing, and shared data with relevant authorities. RZSP/Expat Media
