Filipina, 4 Indians share Dh1 million in Mahzooz draw

DUBAI – A Dubai-based Filipina and four Indian expatriates are sharing the Dh1 million second prize in the recent Mahzooz draw after matching five out of six winning numbers. Wendy, a 41-year-old office manager in Dubai, got lucky twice in Saturday’s draw after participating in Mahzooz (formerly Emirates Loto) since it launched. She will take home Dh200,000 as her share. "We felt very good and positive about the numbers we chose last week. Everyday we'd say around the house 'don't worry we're going to win Mahzooz this week'," Wendy said. "And we did." She had two entries to Saturday’s draw, both of which won. The first scored her Dh1,000 after matching four out of six winning numbers, while the second won her the big cash prize. "I was driving with my friend during the draw and asked my brother to check the numbers for me. He mentioned I got four out of six. I was shocked and ecstatic to win the 1,000 dirhams." Then came the twist. "As I was celebrating, my friend mentioned that on my other entry, I matched five numbers," recalled Wendy. "I had to pull the car over to go online and check the results. I started crying and thinking to myself 'is this really happening, is this really true'." For Wendy, calling this turn events life changing is an understatement. "This money changes everything for me and my family. I can finally bring my daughter here from the Philippines," she said. The Filipina has not seen her 8-year-old daughter in more than two years due to Covid-related travel restrictions. "I usually go back once a year but with Covid-19 restrictions, I haven't been able to go back the past two years," she said. Apart from reuniting with her daughter, Wendy plans to use her winnings to help her family. "I will buy a house in the Philippines for my family, and I will give some money to my mom," said Wendy, who lives with her mother and brother. Four Indian expats will share the Dh1 million prize with Wendy after matching five out of six winning numbers. They will also take home Dh200,000 each. Sivakumar, 47, an Indian expat living in Abu Dhabi, said he will use his winnings to “repay my home loan and put money aside for my kids' future education." Vasu, 57, an Indian expat living in Dubai, said: "The best part of this win is that it's shared. I am happy but so are other people, which is great." Two of the expats who won the draw live in Oman: Suresh, 42; and Noushad, 44. Suresh said he is going to use the money to buy a new house for his family in Kerala. Noushad said his luck came “at the perfect time”. “I started building my house in Kerala but then, due to Covid-19, my finances took a hit and I had to stop. Now I can finish what I started. You should always be positive and keep trying. Luck will come to you one day," Noushad said. ICA/Expat Media
