Jovelyn Galleno case: Cousin admits to rape, murder

The cousin of missing woman Jovelyn Galleno has confessed that the 22-year-old mall worker in Palawan was raped and murdered, according to the suspect in a video interview with Radio Bandera Philippines. Leobert Dasmariñas admitted that he was an accomplice to the crime, saying that he and the victim's other cousin, Jovert Valdestamon, planned the crime after showing interest in Galleno.   "He was interested in my cousin. He told me he wanted to rape someone," Dasmariñas said in Filipino, referring to Valdestamon. Dasmariñas recalled that they stalked Galleno and waited for her before they dragged her into the woods, where Valdestamon assaulted and raped her. "The moon was bright which allowed me to see that he was taking off the clothes of my cousin. She was still breathing," he said. "He signaled for me to come over. When I got there, my cousin was no longer breathing. She was gone," he added. Dasmariñas claimed he only stood as the lookout and did not assault or rape the victim. "I did not do anything to her. I was just scared that he would harm me because he just got out of prison," Dasmariñas explained. On Tuesday (August 23), Dasmariñas surrendered to authorities and informed them of the place where they allegedly dumped her body. Officers said they found a skull and some bones. An investigation is ongoing to corroborate the statements of the suspect. The remains that were discovered will undergo DNA test to confirm that they belong to Galleno, according to police. Meanwhile, the video interview garnered thousands of comments alleging that Dasmariñas' statements may have been "scripted" and that he may have been paid to cover up the real perpetrators. Galleno disappeared on the evening of August 5 after her work shift. News of her disappearance went viral as rumors escalated of a snake-like creature attacking unknowing victims at a famous mall in Palawan. On social media, photos have been widely circulated showing a deserted mall in the weeks following Galleno's disappearance, with many saying that the rumor of the creature hiding in the mall has sparked fear among shoppers.
