The iconic Meydan Bridge in Dubai. ARCIVE

For the longest time, Dubai’s iconic Meydan Bridge only opened once a year, and even then, not everyone could pass, unless you are a royal, a VIP or Tom Cruise. Completed in March 2010, the Meydan Bridge is reserved as a special VIP entrance for the royal family and their guests, particularly when they attend the Dubai World Cup. The bridge is also used in special video projects. Tom Cruise drove over this bridge in Mission Impossible 3. Every year, the royal family and VIPs travel on this bridge to attend the Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Race Course. They would cross the special route over the Meydan Bridge and its extension, the Royal Bridge, which remains an exclusive passage. The Meydan Bridge connects the Meydan hotel to the main road. The 6-lane bridge is 450-metres long, with a central span of 60 metres across the canal. The illuminated bridge is a spectacular sight with its undulating wave form. Philips used special LED fixtures that would emit blue light while providing a maintenance-free and energy-efficient solution. ICA/Expat Media
