OFW families claim boxes abandoned by UAE-based cargo

Families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) flocked to the Bureau of Customs to claim their long-awaited Balikbayan boxes abandoned by a UAE-based cargo company. Arya, one of the consignees shared that she had been waiting for the delivery for seven months. Most of the boxes have reportedly been abandoned for nearly a year. “It’s been seven months. My mother sent it on March 24, 2022. She already came home, stayed for two months and left back for work but we still haven’t received the box,” Arya said. BOC recently completed the release process of more than 8,000 Balikbayan boxes stuck in their custody after being caught in the “Balikbayan box scam.” Claimants only need to provide a government ID, a copy of the receipt, and an authorization letter if the boxes will be received by their representative. The boxes were abandoned at Bureau of Customs by a UAE-based delivery company that allegedly failed to pay the agency for the door-to-door local delivery service.
