Peru man found with 800-year-old mummy in bag

Peru police found a mummified human, between 600 and 800 years old, in a food delivery bag of a former delivery man. He had the mummy in his possession for almost 30 years. Julio Cesar Bermejo, 26, will continue to be held while the case is investigated. The isothermal bag the man had previously used to deliver food to people's houses contained the corpse. The body was wrapped in bandages in a fetal position. While on patrol in a park in Puno, the police found the remains where Bermejo was with his friends. Bermejo asserted that he was not attempting to sell the mummy but wanted to show it to them. Bermejo said the mummy is his "Juanita" and "like my spiritual girlfriend." "At home, she's in my room, she sleeps with me. I take care of her," he said. According to the Ministry of Culture, the pre-Hispanic artifact was a mummified adult male, possibly from Puno's eastern area, a Peruvian Andes region some 1,300 kilometers (more than 800 miles) southeast of Lima. "It's not a Juanita, it's a Juan," a ministry specialist confirmed and added that the mummy belonged to a male at least 45 years old.
