We try the DXB Grill. Here's the verdict
DUBAI - The moment my dining partner and I set foot on DXB Grill at Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai, we were welcomed by the fishy scent of the seafood bar to our left and the inviting aroma of the tandoor oven, steak and rotisserie to our right. It’s a fair greeting, setting us up for what promised to be a lullaby of ice and fire to the palate. Ambiance My eyes took in the contemporary classic décor, the lit ceiling creating an illusion of space and making the venue look vibrant, especially with its intricate Arabesque-like patterns. A thematic brown and white color combination runs through the restaurant’s plush seats, napkins, mahogany tables and wall linings, while red and orange checkered mats lay on the table to insinuate an image of a live grill. Also looking chic and classy is its private dining room that can host up to 12 people. Service The service here is highly formal, but pleasantly unintimidating. It’s as if we were eating at a high-end gastropub with a laidback, unpretentious eatery vibe. Food Despite a limited selection, the appetizers are a powerhouse, both in taste and presentation. I loved the inventive Caesar salad served inside a deep-fried batter and topped with shrimps and parmesan flakes (pictured below, left). The crisp sound of the batter breaking was music to the ears. Plus, it went suprisingly well with the shrimps.
The grilled scallop tartlets (pictured above, right) are a must-try. I savoured the delightful mix of perfectly grilled scallops with strong saffron verge sauce and black olive tapenade.
The trio salmon serving was also a delight and came with healthy salsas that really kicked up the flavour a notch.
The highlight of the evening was the steaks: grain-fed or grass-fed meat served as a slab or on skewers. What set them unique were the sauce and the sides. The key here is good pairing. I loved every bite of the chunky beef cheeks. They literally melt in the mouth. They’re incredibly good to pair with spicy barbecue sauce and a truffle mashed potato on the side.
The rib-eye steak was also a delight, served straight from the grill and onto our table with extra colourful frills. The juicy slab came with a DXB Grill branding, which we found quite amusing.
And just when we thought we’ve had enough food after the main courses, the desserts stole the show! We plead guilty to gluttony for having reached this part of the meal, but who could resist the Nutella & Marshmallow Haven? Nutella is the universal kryptonite of foodies. One will find it hard to resist, especially if served with slightly glazed marshmallows. Eat it while it’s hot!
The agar panna cotta brulee was a delight to the eyes and tastebuds. A bite of this caramelized vanilla panna cotta with poached wild berries will leave you sugar high. But kudos to the chef for plating it with sesame crumble to balance it off with a savoury twist.
