Review: Real Activ Honey - Ancient sweetener gets a modern cinnamon and aniseed twist

  HOW do you like your honey? Expat Media recently received two jars of locally-made honey to try out, so we did not hesitate to give it a taste test. But first, let’s talk about this ancient sweetener. For millions of years, honey has been used around the world as a natural sweetener. In fact, it is called the nectar of the Gods in Greek mythology, with the Gods consuming it to become immortal. In modern times, honey still remains a versatile food that is packed with a lot of nutritional and medicinal properties. It contains vitamins B and C, and minerals such as calcium, copper, iron and magnesium. This natural sweetener enhances the immune system and has been used traditionally for treating colds and sore throats. The consumption of honey is also thought to help treat gastric ulcers and other gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions. So it was only a matter of time that modern taste buds experimented with this age-old ingredient, which was exactly what Dabur brought into our supermarket shelves in the form of Real Activ Honey. We were pleasantly surprised with the twist in the flavours: the aniseed version and the cinnamon. Anise is a plant native to Egypt and Greece and has been used for centuries to treat health ailments and mixing it in this honey really enhances its medicinal value, we think. According to the nutritional chart, the “all natural” honey with aniseed contained 99.95% honey and .05% aniseed but it’s surprising how you can still taste and smell the sweet, aromatic anise with its licorice flavour. It complements rather than overpower the taste of the honey. We also loved the Real Activ Honey Cinnamon flavour, which is the bigger star between the two. Cinnamon is one of the most aromatic and healthiest spices on earth, and it also has health benefits such as lowering blood sugar and bad cholesterol and reducing heart disease risk. Both bottles also contain a darker shade of honey. The colour of honey is said to influence the antioxidant content and darker honeys are known to have higher amounts of antioxidants. Real Activ’s jar contained 99.86% honey .04% cinnamon extract and 0.1% cinnamon flavour. As I took a spoonful from the jar, I could instantly smell the sweet cinnamon intermingling with the smell of honey. My tastebuds also picked up the amazing flavours after I put the spoonful of honey in my mouth. What a perfect pairing.
