On Sunday, an 11-year-old child died after his e-scooter collided with a car in Sharjah. The vehicle's driver did not stop at the site. When police received a report of the incident in the emirate's Al Taawun district, they quickly dispatched emergency personnel to the location. It is still unknown whether or not police have identified the motorist. An Emirati child was also severely injured in June 2021 after his electric scooter collided with a car near Khor Fakkan. Sharjah Police has conducted safety campaigns in response to the growing popularity of e-scooters. The police department has warned against the irresponsible use of e-scooters and bikes and has advised riders to wear protective gear. In March of last year, UAE hospitals reported a surge in electric scooter-related injuries. Doctors say broken bones, bruises, and scrapes from falling off the two-wheelers — some can travel more than 30 kilometers an hour — are common.
