Sharjah to ban plastic bags starting January 2024

Sharjah will be banning single-use plastic bags starting in January 2024 as part of the emirates' support for environmental and conservation plans. The directives were in line with the instructions of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The directives intend to: 1. Protect the environment from the dangers of plastic pollution and reduce the adverse effects of harmful practices. 2. Enhance and encourage a culture of environmental protection and sustainability by reducing the consumption of single-use plastic bags and materials, leading to their ban. 3. Organize the shift from the consumption of single-use plastic bags and materials and work to provide environmentally friendly alternatives. 4. Ensure that multi-use bags and materials are handled sustainably. The decision asserts that starting on January 1, 2024, trade, production, offer, or import of single-use plastic bags and materials into the emirate is considered illegal unless they are replaced with multi-use bags and materials with technical specifications and standards approved by the Department of Municipalities Affairs. In October 2022, authorities will impose a 25 fil tariff on all single-use plastic bags. The Department of Municipal Affairs in the Emirate of Sharjah is specialized in the following: 1- Laying down the necessary plans and policies to implement the provisions of this resolution. 2- Determining the prohibited single-use plastic bags and materials and the exceptions contained therein. 3- Preparing and implementing awareness and educational programs on the importance of shifting from consuming single-use plastic bags and materials to consuming other sustainable and multi-use alternatives.
