The UAE has banned rice exports and re-exports for four months, the Ministry of Economy announced. The ban, which began on Friday (July 28), covers rice of all varieties, including brown rice, black rice, fully or partially milled rice and broken rice. The decision also includes a ban on exports and re-export of rice originating from India and imported into the country, including free zones, after July 20, 2023. Companies that want to export or re-export rice must apply for an export permit from the Ministry of Economy. The permit is valid for 30 days. Supermarkets in the UAE and suppliers were expecting prices to rise temporarily following the rice export ban, which follows a decision by the Indian government last week to stop exports of non-basmati white and broken rice amid an increase in prices and monsoon damage to crops.
