Small firms now required to hire 1 Emirati in 2024

The UAE has expanded its Emiratisation drive to include companies with a minimum of 20 employees, requiring the companies to hire at least one Emirati staff in 2024 or be fined Dh96,000. Under the expanded scope, private companies with 20 to 49 employees must hire at least one Emirati in 2024 and another one in 2025. According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), there are more than 12,000 private companies that have to comply with the Cabinet decision. In a statement, MoHRE called on companies subject to the decision to “quickly meet their Emiratisation targets and avoid delaying it until the end of the year.” Companies that fail to meet the Emiratisation target will be fined Dh96,000 for each Emirati not hired in 2024. The fine will be collected in January 2025. The fine will increase to Dh108,000 if companies fail to meet their Emiratisation target in 2025. The ongoing Emiratisation also applies to private companies with 50 or more employees, which are required to hire Emiratis as part of 2 percent of their workforce per year. ICA/Expat Media
