UAE Fatwa Council allows use of Covid-19 vaccine

  DUBAI – The UAE Fatwa Council says the use of Covid-19 vaccine is permissible under the Islamic law. The council made the statement after some Muslims raised concern over the halal status of the vaccine. In Dubai, authorities are now offering free Covid-19 vaccination for four groups, including senior citizens and frontliners. The vaccines were developed by Pfizer-BioNTech. Last month, the UAE approved for use the Chinese-developed Sinopharm vaccine. Currently, vaccination is optional in the UAE. "Coronavirus vaccination is classified under preventive medicines for individuals, as recommended by the Islamic faith, particularly in times of pandemic diseases when the healthy happen to be prone to infections due to the high risk of contracting the disease, therefore posing risk to the entire society," the council said. The council said that the highly contagious nature of the coronavirus and the lack of alternative medicine are strong justifications to use the vaccine, even if it contained non-Halal ingredients.
