UAE bans price increase for rice, 8 items

This Ramadan, it is illegal for retailers in the UAE to raise the prices of nine basic items without approval, according to the Ministry of Economy. The ministry announced on Wednesday (March 6) a price lock on cooking oil, eggs, dairy, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes as well as bread and wheat. “The policy prohibits price hikes of nine essential goods which are, cooking oil, eggs, dairy, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread/wheat without prior approval from the Ministry of Economy and the competent authorities in the country,” said Abdullah Sultan Al Fan Al Shamsi, assistant undersecretary for the monitoring and follow-up sector at the Ministry of Economy. The ministry said it will carry out regular inspections to ensure that retailers are following the price freeze. The ministry also urged shoppers to report violations to the ministry on the toll free number 8001222 and to keep their receipts to verify their purchases in case of price disputes. “This enables them to lodge complaints, report detrimental commercial practices that undermine consumer protection, and share suggestions and ideas to enhance the consumer protection landscape in the country,” Al Shamsi said.
