UAE to slap Dh100,000 fine on unlicensed health workers

The UAE Government has approved new rules for nurses and other healthcare professionals in the country, with tougher penalties of imprisonment and up to Dh100,000 fine for violators. The updated rules apply to nurses, pharmacists, and non-doctors in healthcare professions, including laboratories, veterinary, medical physics, functional therapy, physiotherapy, aesthetics, anesthesia, audiology, and radiology. Healthcare workers who practice without a licence will be jailed and fined between Dh50,000 and Dh100,000, or one of these penalties. The same penalties apply to healthcare workers found to have submitted fake documents or incorrect data in order to get a licence. The law also prohibits healthcare workers to disclose a patient’s secrets. The health authority may also close the health facility if the violator operates it individually. New penalties have been stipulated for healthcare facilities involved in non-serious offences that do not require temporary closure of the facility, or the suspension of its director, operator, administration or employee. Under the UAE law, private health facilities that violate the healthcare law will be fined between Dh1,000 and Dh1 million, or face temporary closure for up to six months. In case the facility’s director, manager or personnel violates the law, then the facility shall be fined Dh1,000 up to Dh500,0000 and face temporary suspension of its licence for up to six months, or the revocation of the license to operate.
