UAE: Cheaper onion as India lifts export ban

Onion is expected to be cheaper soon in the UAE after India began the process of lifting its onion export ban to the emirates. The prices of onion in the UAE are expected to drop by up to 20 percent. This came after India allowed the export of 64,400 tonnes of onions to the UAE and Bangladesh earlier this week. Last December, India banned the export of onions until the end of March as heavy rains in the country pushed the prices of the commodity in the local market. Since the ban, the prices of onions in the UAE rose sharply from an average of Dh2 per kilo to as much as Dh8 per kilo. Retailers have been sourcing onions from Turkey, Sudan, Iran and China as an alternative. Abdullah Sultan Al Fan Al Shamsi, assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy, said on Wednesday (March 6) that the UAE was in talks with India on its onion exports. According to India’s Ministry of Commerce, the Asian country will export 14,400 tonnes of onions, with a quantity ceiling of 3,600 metric tonnes quarterly to the UAE through the National Cooperative Exports.
