The Emirate of Umm Al Quwain's Executive Council declared that the decision to ban single-use plastic bags will take effect on January 1, 2023. The decision states that starting on January 1 of the following year, single-use plastic bags will be phased out in the emirate. Multi-use bags, biodegradable bags, bags made of paper or cloth, or bags that meet technical requirements and standards approved by the Umm Al Quwain Municipality Department will replace single-use plastic bags. The Council mandates that sales outlets in the emirate impose a tariff of no less than 25 fils as of January 1, 2023, on each single-use plastic bag they present to the customer in anticipation of the emirate's complete ban on single-use plastic bags.
