UPDATED at 8:10pm on June 12 Two of the UAE's most recognizable landmarks illuminated in the colours of the Philippine flag on Friday (June 12) as Filipinos across the Emirates celebrated the 128th Philippine Independence Day. The annual tribute saw the Philippine flag displayed on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai at 8:10pm (UAE time), followed by a special lighting of the ADNOC headquarters in Abu Dhabi at 8:30pm. The twin celebrations are in tribute to Filipinos across the UAE, highlighting the strong friendship between the Philippines and the UAE. In Dubai, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Alfonso Ferdinand Ver graced the tribute at Burj Khalifa. He was joined by embassy and consulate staff, as well as representatives of the Filipino Social Club.

A symbol of UAE-Philippines friendship

The annual Independence Day tribute at the Burj Khalifa has become a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship between the two nations. Since 2019, the world's tallest tower has illuminated in the colours of the Philippine flag each June, creating a spectacular visual display that has become one of the most anticipated moments of Independence Day celebrations in the UAE. For the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos living and working across the Emirates, the annual display serves as a reminder of their homeland while celebrating their contributions to UAE society. Philippine Independence Day is officially observed every June 12 to commemorate the country's declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898. Across the UAE, Filipino organizations traditionally hold cultural festivals, sporting events, family gatherings and community celebrations throughout June, attracting thousands of overseas Filipinos each year. This year's festivities have already drawn record crowds. The Kalayaan 2026 celebration at Dubai World Trade Centre on Sunday (June 7) attracted more than 60,000 attendees, according to organizers. The event featured cultural performances, live entertainment, community exhibits and activities showcasing Filipino heritage, traditions and achievements. The turnout highlighted the strength and unity of the Filipino community, one of the largest expatriate populations in the UAE. The Independence Day festivities will continue on Saturday (June 13) at Sheikh Saeed Hall 1 in Dubai World Trade Centre. The day-long celebration will run from 8am to 11pm and feature a wide range of activities for families and community members. Filipinos in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi will also have an opportunity to join Independence Day celebrations on June 20. The free community event, hosted at Zayed Central Library, will run from 9am to 5pm and focus on Filipino culture, unity and community engagement.
