For many Filipinos in the UAE, the booming voice of Enrico “Rico” Cardoniga is instantly recognizable. It is the signature call of a man who has spent years becoming one of the most familiar faces and voices in Dubai’s Filipino community. From concerts and corporate launches to community celebrations and major entertainment events, Rico, better known as The Mic Master, has built a name that carries both energy and trust. Now, after years of being the man behind the microphone, Rico is stepping into a bigger role: entrepreneur. In an Expat Media exclusive interview, the longtime Dubai expat opens up about his journey from struggling job seeker to one of the UAE’s most sought-after emcees, and why he has chosen this chapter of his life to become co-owner of Trip Expert Business and Marketing Solutions. For Rico, this is not just about business. It is about building events with purpose, creating opportunities for Filipinos, and proving that success should never come at the cost of integrity. From rejection to reinvention
Before he became “Mr. Day to Day” and The Mic Master, Rico was simply another overseas Filipino trying to survive. He arrived in the UAE in 2009 after spending five years in Saipan, where he worked as a DJ and broadcaster. Like many OFWs, he came to Dubai hoping for better opportunities after recession affected jobs abroad. Instead, he found another difficult reality. “I exited the UAE seven times to renew my visa and had a hard time looking for a job,” Rico recalls. Even landing work as a DJ, something he had already been doing for years in the Philippines and Saipan, proved nearly impossible. “They told me because I didn’t have UAE experience.” He did visa runs to Oman three times, via Ras Al Khaimah three times, and even to Kish Island once, trying to stay afloat while chasing opportunities. At the time, his “bread and butter” was organizing singing contests in bars. It was during one of these events that his life took an unexpected turn. He often approached a safety manager for sponsorships worth just Dh500 for his events. One day, the manager finally told him, “Rico, you’ve asked me to sponsor these events twice already!” Instead of saying no, the man gave him life-changing advice. He encouraged Rico to study safety management. “I had no idea what that was because my background was in broadcasting,” Rico says. The manager offered him a scholarship for a Diploma in Fire Safety and Engineering, a Dh5,000 course registered in New York with training in Dubai. Rico says yes. That decision helps him land work as a safety consultant and later gives him the financial stability to keep doing what he truly loves: events.Finding his voice and building his name
Long before Dubai, Rico’s relationship with the microphone started in college when he became a radio jockey. His voice, however, did not start out powerful. “When I started my career in radio, my voice was so weak,” he says. His station manager gave him simple but strict advice: wake up at 3am and read the newspaper aloud every day. “I did that for almost a year and developed my style,” Rico says. That discipline shaped the ring-announcer voice people now know so well. He later managed a radio station in the Philippines for 10 years and continued working in entertainment during his five-year stint in Saipan. In Dubai, he became known not just for hosting but for being everywhere. He emceed concerts for major stars, hosted corporate events, became the recognizable face of Day to Day discount stores, and even earned the nickname “Mr. Day to Day” after appearing at events and promotions. One memorable moment came while hosting an event in Qatar during Sarah Geronimo’s concert. “People called me ‘Mr Day to Day,’” he says. “They also wanted to take photos with me.” For Rico, fame was never the goal. “When I started building my name, money was never my driving point,” he says. “Even if I wasn’t paid, I’d stand there to emcee. Especially when it came to community events, from Bayanihan to Kalayaan.” That mindset became the foundation of his reputation. Why he finally said yes to business
After more than a decade with Day to Day, Rico resigned due to health concerns. He later worked with Send2 during its UAE launch before being invited by businessman Junie Sorsano to help with social media for Trip Expert International. Their relationship went back years. “When I just started vlogging, he was one of the very first people I worked with,” Rico says. Then came the unexpected offer. Junie encouraged him to start his own business under Trip Expert Business and Marketing Solutions. “At first I was hesitant,” Rico admits. He set the idea aside for nearly two months. “He told me it was my time.” Eventually, after consulting his wife and reflecting on the opportunity, Rico says yes. Today, he is co-owner of the company and leading its events and marketing direction. What changed his mind was simple. “Trip Expert Business and Marketing Solutions offers events, and that is one of the primary reasons,” Rico says.
For someone who had spent decades studying the success and failures of event companies in the UAE, the decision felt right. “I am a witness to the rise and fall of events companies. Some succeeded, others failed,” he says.
“That’s where I realized that with my knowledge, I think it’s high time that I share this through this business opportunity.”
Rico is clear that he does not want to build just another events company. He wants to build ethical events.
He has seen too many failures in the industry caused by poor planning, wrong pricing, weak promotions, and dependence on sponsorships without real financial backing. “Even if you have a good concert, if you don’t have the resources and no money to finance the event and you’re just relying on sponsors, that’s a very difficult spot to be in.”
He believes promotion should never be random. “Marketing and promotions should not be a shotgun approach. It’s better to have a rifle with telescope approach. It must be precise.”
His company’s first major project is Pinoy Pop Star Middle East, a singing competition that marks the beginning of a much bigger vision. The goal is monthly events across different sectors, not just entertainment.
“There are so many events we can do, from sports to education. We are planning to do an interschool activity.”
He also wants to focus on leadership and personal growth for Filipinos in the UAE. “I’d like to create an event that will help create more Filipino leaders in the UAE by teaching them leadership skills. I want to change the lives of people.”
For Rico, success is not measured only by ticket sales. “Those events are not just for profit, but to help Filipinos grow, and to help the community.”
Even as a businessman, Rico says his mission remains the same.
Back in the Philippines, he helped organize community-centered events while managing a radio station. He did the same in Saipan. He continues that mindset in Dubai. “Those activities that we organized, especially community related, it has become part of my system,” he says. “I feel better when I help somebody.”
It is perhaps the clearest explanation of why Rico’s journey feels bigger than business. CAM/Expat Media
