Dubai plans to vaccinate 70% of residents by 2021

  DUBAI – All Dubai residents will be invited to get Covid-19 vaccination in Dubai starting in April as part of a plan to vaccinate 70 percent of the Dubai population before the end of 2021, a UAE official said. Dubai began the first phase of free vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine last week, prioritizing the elderly, frontliners and people with special needs or medical conditions. "We are targeting to vaccinate approximately 70 per cent of the population of Dubai by the end of 2021. We want to reach the herd immunity that is required," said Farida Al Khaja, chairwoman of Dubai's steering committee for Covid-19 vaccinations. Al Khaja said that Dubai will roll out its second phase of mass vaccination against Covid-19 in April, and that it will be open to all Emiratis as well as expatriates. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been found to be 95 percent effective against Covid-19. Currently, only Dubai residents may avail of the free vaccine. Across the UAE, the Chinese-developed Sinopharm vaccine is available to all UAE residents and is being administered in Abu Dhabi hospitals and field hospitals.
