Duterte lifts deployment ban on Filipino healthcare workers but only 5,000 new hires can be deployed per year
MANILA – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has lifted the deployment ban on Filipino healthcare workers who want to work abroad, the presidential spokesman said on Monday (November 23). Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte lifted the deployment ban based on the recommendation of the Department of Labor and Employment and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases. The lifting of the deployment ban means that doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, nursing aides and other healthcare workers can now join their workplace abroad. In April, the Philippines limited international travel for Filipinos due to the coronavirus pandemic. Roque said the recent lifting on the ban on deployment of Filipino healthcare workers is in “consonance with the policy of promoting full employment, rising standard of living and improved quality of life for all”.Philippines puts annual cap on deployment of newly hired healthcare workers
Meanwhile, Duterte also imposed an annual deployment cap of 5,000 newly hired healthcare workers to all countries of destination beginning January 1, 2021. This means that only 5,000 newly hired healthcare workers per year may be permitted to leave the Philippines to start their employment abroad. Roque said that while the Philippines “considers the talent of Filipinos and the demand for Filipino healthcare workers abroad”, the country also wants to make sure there are “enough nurses here because there is a pandemic in the Philippine. The presidential spokesperson said the 5,000 yearly cap on deployment of new hires may be increased “in due course”.
