A sea of Philippine flags, cultural performances and community pride filled the Dubai World Trade Centre on Sunday (June 7) as more than 60,000 Filipinos gathered for Kalayaan 2026, one of the largest Philippine Independence Day celebrations outside the Philippines. The event brought together Filipino residents from across the UAE, alongside senior UAE and Philippine officials who paid tribute to the community’s contributions and the enduring ties between the two countries. Leading the celebration was UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, who described the Filipino community as an essential part of the UAE’s success. “The Filipino community has become an important part of the UAE’s success,” Sheikh Nahyan said. “Through your contributions across every sector, you have strengthened our country and support its continued progress.”

Ambassador thanks UAE leaders

Philippine Ambassador Alfonso Ferdinand Ver expressed gratitude to the UAE leadership and reaffirm the solidarity between Filipinos and Emiratis. “On behalf of the one-million-strong community, please allow me to express our profound gratitude to this nation’s leaders,” Ver said. He praised UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for their leadership and vision. “Today as we cherish our own freedom, so do we stand in solidarity with the UAE,” he said. Ver also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in service to the UAE and emphasized that the relationship between Filipinos and Emiratis remains a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation. “The strong ties of the Filipinos and Emiratis will continue to be the cornerstone of the robust and ever-growing Philippines-UAE partnership for the last 52 years and in the years to come,” he said.

Meaning of homeland abroad

Philippine Consul General Ambrosio Brian Enciso reflected on what Philippine Independence Day means for Filipinos living overseas. “Independence Day is not just to remember the past but to ask ourselves what it means to be one nation when not all of us are in the Philippines,” Enciso said in Filipino. He said many overseas Filipinos discover a deeper appreciation for their homeland while living abroad. “For many Filipinos, the homeland is not merely a place we left behind. It is the memory of home, the voice of our parents, our dreams for our children, the table where we shared meals and the language we carry with us wherever we go.” Enciso also connected the message to the UAE’s Year of Family initiative. “The Filipino family is the first school of love for country. When families are strong, communities become strong and society becomes stronger,” he said.

Bayanihan spirit praised

Labour Attache John Rio Bautista highlighted the challenges faced by some Filipinos earlier this year and praised the community’s response. “The beginning of 2026 was a challenging time for many members of our Filipino community,” Bautista said. “Yet in those difficult moments we witnessed the best of the Filipino spirit.” He cited volunteers, Filipino organizations, community leaders and ordinary residents who stepped forward to help those in need. “We saw bayanihan through the actions of volunteers, community leaders, Filipino organizations and ordinary Filipinos who voluntarily helped those in need,” he said. The Kalayaan event featured performances from Arci Muñoz, P-pop groups 1st.One, G22 and ALAMAT, as well as traditional cultural presentations including folk dances and the Sagala procession. Filipino-owned businesses also used it as an opportunity to reach out to the community in the UAE. Presented through Emirates Loves Philippines, Infinite Communities and The Filipino Channel, the celebration showcased the strength of one of the UAE’s largest expatriate communities while reinforcing the close friendship between the Philippines and the Emirates. Philippine Independence Day is officially observed every June 12 to commemorate the country’s declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898.
