Before her three businesses, live selling platforms, and a growing cross-border customer base, there was a single bag that started it all for Dubai-based entrepreneur Maria Fatima Mariano-Perado. In the middle of our interview, Maria Fatima brings out that very first branded bag she bought for herself as an Overseas Filipino. A classic black leather Coach bag. Carefully packed. Still in pristine condition. She reaches inside to fish out the matching wallet, her two-tone Rolex with set diamonds glint quietly as she recalls the moment it all began. “This is where everything started,” she tells Expat Media, holding the Coach bag for a moment longer, now kept as a personal relic of everything she has built since arriving in the UAE. “I told myself I will never sell this because this is where everything started.” For Maria Fatima, these are markers of a life rebuilt from scratch in the UAE, where she arrived with uncertainty, stayed through struggle, and eventually emerged as a founder of three growing Dubai-based businesses: Luxe Authentic, Luxe for Less, and Luxe Skin & Scents by Mestizas. Today, she moves between live selling sessions, supplier negotiations and brand building. But even with the visible signs of success, from curated luxury pieces to a growing international customer base, she remains grounded in the same mindset that shaped her journey: discipline, faith and a deep understanding of what it means to start over.

From student sales to 15 years in real estate

Before Dubai, Maria Fatima had already spent more than 15 years in real estate in the Philippines, building her career from the ground up and eventually becoming a licensed real estate broker. She started at 19, while still a working student. “I was giving out flyers while studying,” she recalls. “From second year college until I graduated, I paid my tuition through commissions.” Her course in Aviation Business Administration with a major in Marketing was tied to her early dream of entering the airline industry. But life took a different route. By 17, she had already become a mother. “I got pregnant at 16,” she says. “I consider it a fortunate mistake. It was a wake-up call that I had to shape up because I was now responsible for another life.” Her daughter, now turning 20, remains her strongest motivation. “She visited me in Dubai last December,” Maria Fatima shares. “Seeing her proud of me means everything.” Maria Fatima arrived in the UAE in 2021, initially on what was meant to be a short business trip. She was part of a Philippine real estate roadshow with her then partner, now husband. When sales targets were not met and the contract ended, they made a decision that would redefine their lives. “We decided to stay and look for opportunities,” she says. “And we were blessed that we found growth here.” The transition was not smooth. She experienced visa fraud multiple times while searching for stability in Dubai. “I remember crying while riding the Metro,” she says. “I asked God why it kept happening.” She eventually found her breakthrough in marketing and business development at Graniti Building Materials, a company where she now works full time. For her, it became more than employment. “It was a career breakthrough,” she says. “I had to go through the wrong ones to recognize the right one.”

The bag moment that started everything

The idea for her businesses was born unexpectedly, during a personal moment of gratitude. After receiving her salary, Maria Fatima prioritised tithes, family support, and savings for a long-awaited vacation to the Philippines. “I always put myself last,” she says. Then came what she describes as a moment of clarity. “It felt like God was whispering, ‘Daughter, it is time to buy something for yourself.’” She visited a supplier showroom in Dubai and bought two branded bags and a wallet. It was her first time purchasing luxury items for herself. “I was so happy,” she says. “As an OFW, we rarely buy things for ourselves.” That moment quickly evolved into opportunity. She asked if she could do live selling for the supplier. They happily agreed. “No one was doing it for them. I started with no capital,” she says. “Just live selling from their store.” What followed was organic growth, word-of-mouth traction, and the beginning of Luxe Authentic and Luxe for Less, launched in 2022. “I realized OFWs want luxury too, but at the right value,” she says. “That’s when the idea of accessibility was born.” Today, her Luxe Authentic focuses on verified preloved luxury pieces including Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Prada and YSL, while Luxe for Less caters to accessible branded items such as Coach and Tory Burch. Maria Fatima also operates as a sourcing broker with partners in the US, UK and Japan. A growing trend she has noticed in Dubai is a shift in mindset. “People are wiser now,” she says. “It’s no longer just about status. It’s about value and practicality.” Trust remains central to her business model. “We show everything during live selling,” she explains. “No filters, no hidden flaws. What you see is what you get.” With over 300 positive reviews and a strong base of repeat international clients, the business has expanded into consignments and cross-border shipping.

From luxury bags to lifestyle brand

Maria Fatima’s entrepreneurial journey did not stop with handbags. Her personal style and client interactions eventually led her to launch Luxe Skin & Scents by Mestizas, a perfume line inspired by luxury scents. “My clients always ask what perfume I wear,” she says. “That’s how it started.” The brand now offers oil-based perfumes designed for long-lasting wear at an accessible price point. “I always tell them, you should not only look expensive, you should smell expensive,” she says with a smile. Despite managing multiple ventures, Maria Fatima continues to work full time while building her businesses alongside her husband, who is also her partner in entrepreneurship. Last year, she added another milestone to her growing list of achievements after earning her MBA. This year, she is setting her sights on a new goal: launching success seminars and workshops aimed at empowering Filipinos to grow personally and professionally. Balancing roles has not been easy, but she is clear about her foundation. “If you take care of God’s business, He will take care of yours,” she says. She credits her parents, husband, daughter and faith as her anchors. “When people started coming back, not just to buy but because they trust us, that’s when I knew it was working,” she adds. Looking back, the once-shy purchase of a Coach bag has become a symbol of transformation. “I am no longer materialistic,” she says. “I dress well, but I focus on building something that lasts.” For Maria Fatima, success is no longer defined by what she owns, but by what she creates. “God was not just giving me a gift,” she reflects. “He was giving me a livelihood.” ICA/Expat Media
