Muslims are encouraged to witness the crescent moon on Friday
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has urged all Muslims in the kingdom to observe the crescent moon of the holy month of Ramadan on Friday evening (April 1). In a statement, the court urges those who can witness the moon with their own eyes to register their testimony to the nearest court or report to the nearest center that can contact a court. Ramadan is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar. When the moon rises over the kingdom on Friday, it signifies that the holy month will begin the next day. Otherwise, Ramadan will start on Sunday. On Monday, the kingdom also announced restrictions on the volume of loudspeakers in mosques during Ramadan. According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, speakers must not exceed more than a third of the highest volume level. Officials have instructed mosque staff to follow circulars that limit the usage of external loudspeakers for the first (adhan) and second (iqamah) calls to prayer. During the holy month, speakers are not permitted to be utilized for additional prayers.
