UAE law guarantees overtime pay for employees working extra hours during Ramadan

As working days are shortened by two hours during Ramadan, employees working beyond the stipulated working hours are eligible for overtime pay. Businesses like hotels, restaurants, and hospitals may need employees to work longer hours, but they must compensate each employee for working overtime. Dr. Hasan Elhais, the legal consultant of Al Rowaad Advocates, said that “For any extra working hour, an employee is entitled to receive their usual remuneration plus an increase of at least 25 percent of their hourly wage.” “If the overtime is worked between 9pm and 4am, an employee is entitled to receive their usual remuneration plus an increase of at least 50 percent of their hourly salary,” he added. Furthermore, Dr. Elhais also said that overtime should not exceed two hours per day unless the nature of the activity can prevent losses or accidents.
