Police warn residents against helping beggars during Ramadan

The Police authorities in the UAE urged residents not to give money to beggars and to make donations through registered organizations only, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. According to the police, many individuals and groups had been caught begging for large sums of money. The police reminded the public that begging is a crime punishable by law. They also warned the community against engaging with beggars as they tend to deceive the community, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. The authorities confirmed that the majority of the beggars were recruited by organized gangs from outside the country. "Begging can lead to other crimes such as burglary and exploiting children, the elderly, and people of determination to raise money illegally," the police warned. During Ramadan 2022, the Dubai Police arrested 604 people, including 382 beggars and 222 street peddlers. They received 2,235 reports of begging from residents, including 1,956 through the (901) call center and 279 through the Police Eye service. RZSP/Expat Media
