Family, friends fined during drop off if illegal

Days after a recent inspection campaign in Oman saw the country's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) record more than 2,000 illegal transport violations, expats started to express worries on social media that transporting loved ones to and from the airport might result in comparable fines. Workers caught transporting products in their vehicles meant for commercial gain rather than personal use have been fined OMR300 (Dh2,861.46), and violators captured and jailed for illegal transportation have been fined OMR200. "The Ministry would like to clarify that the inspection campaigns on land transport, which the ministry has recently begun to implement, aims to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Land Transport Law," MoTCIT stated on Sunday (April 16). The purpose of putting regulations into effect is to protect the rights of the parties involved in land transportation (the sender and the consignee) and the safety of goods and users of land transportation. The statement said that inspection teams had been instructed to ensure that only drivers who break the rules of the Land Transport Law's executive regulations get fines. The Ministry clearly stated that this regulation does not apply to persons carrying their friends and acquaintances without receiving any "financial reward." The authority stated that those fined for transporting friends and family might report their complaints for consideration to the Land Transport Department at the Ministry's General Office or the Roads Departments in the governorates within 15 days of the date on which the fine was issued.
