Philippine Pavilion opens at Expo 2020 Dubai

  DUBAI – The Philippine Pavilion officially opened at Expo 2020 Dubai on Friday (October 1), to showcase the modern-day Philippines to the world. The opening ceremony was graced by Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana and Philippine Department of Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary Rosvi Gaetos, who also serves as the Philippine Expo 2020 Dubai Alternate Commissioner General. The unveiling of the Philippine pavilion, called Bangkóta, was held at the Sustainability District of the Expo 2020 site. The Bangkóta is the biggest Expo pavilion the Philippines has ever showcased, with a total area of 3,163sqm. “This inaugural event is an embodiment of our awe-inspiring 'Bayanihan', a word that best describes our unyielding unity and collaboration as a community. Together, let us explore the story of our roots as Filipinos,” said Ambassador Quintana, who initially sent a letter to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to push for the Philippine participation in Expo 2020 when it was first announced in 2018. The Philippine official was joined by Philippine Consul General to Dubai Paul Raymond Cortes and Architect Royal Pineda, the Philippines' Overall Thematic and Artistic Director for Expo 2020 Dubai. “Our participation in Expo 2020 Dubai is historic as it marks the biggest participation of the Philippines in any Expo to date, intersecting with our significant role to play in the making of a new world. Now that the Expo 2020 Dubai has opened its doors, we invite everyone to share our story – a story of cultural sustainability as a people - to the rest of the world,” PDTI Assistant Secretary Gaetos said. The inauguration also featured a chorale performance by 65 members of the Filipino Social Club (FilSoc) Expo Chorale. FilSoc President Ericson Reyes said the group is planning the biggest choir performance at the pavilion in December, backed by 200 singers.
