What happens to Expo 2020 site after March?

  DUBAI – When Expo 2020 Dubai closes on March 31, the big question remains on what will happen to the exhibition site afterwards. Expo 2020 Dubai organisers have said it will not be the end of the site when the world fair ends. In fact, the Expo 2020 Dubai site will be transformed in to a futuristic city called District 2020. Organisers said at least 80 percent of the site will remain. District 2020 will have office spaces, residential buildings, parks and exhibition areas. Reem Al Hashimi, Expo’s Director General and UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, said the site of the “world’s biggest show” will become a hub for innovation. “It is a very strongly tech-enabled, 5G tech incredible infrastructure. Everything that we built will stay. We have several country pavilions that will also stay,” Al Hashimi said. “So, really a hub for new tech, a hub for new innovation, and plans are already in place to roll this one out after 80 days when we close,” she said in previous interview. Many of the architectural marvels at the site will remain for visitors to enjoy, such as the 360-degree Al Wasl Dome that features the world’s largest projection on its ceiling. The reverse waterfall will stay. A definite crowd puller at the Expo, the water feature gets water to flow upwards before it rushes down 13-metre-high vertical walls that cascade into rings of fire. The 55-metre-tall rotating observation tower will also remain to give visitors unparalleled views of the Expo 2020 site. Event areas will stay, including the 45,000sqm Dubai Exhibition Centre, which will host concerts, conferences and exhibits long after Expo 2020 closes. The solar-powered Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, will also stay and will become a science centre that will host workshops and exhibits about the environment. Many of the unique pavilions will also remain, like the UAE Pavilion, Saudi Pavilion, India Pavilion and the Alif – The mobility Pavilion, which features the world’s largest passenger elevator.
