Magnitude 6.3 earthquake triggers tsunami warning in Philippines

Following the magnitude 6.6 earthquake near Catanduanes on Tuesday (April 4) at 8:54pm, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a tsunami warning for three provinces in the nation: Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. Residents of Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar are advised not to visit the coast or the beach since these regions will encounter waves less than one meter over the typical tides. PHIVOLCS stated that the first tsunami waves would hit between 9:02pm on Tuesday (April 4) and 12:54am on Wednesday (April 5). PHIVOLCS urged residents of homes extremely close to these provinces' coastlines to relocate further inland. However, PHIVOLCS withdrew the tsunami warning early Wednesday (April 5) due to the 6.6-magnitude earthquake 150 kilometers northeast of Gigmoto, Catanduanes. "Based on available data of our sea level monitoring stations facing the epicentral area, no significant sea level disturbances have been recorded since the 08:54 PM earthquake up until this cancellation of the advisory," according to the statement.
