Thousands expected to apply for UAE amnesty

  ABU DHABI - Thousands of people staying illegally in the UAE are expected to avail of UAE's amnesty starting from August 1, according to diplomatic missions. The three-month amnesty period allows illegals to leave the country without facing fines or prosecution, or regularise their residency status for a minimum fee. Nepal's labour attache in Abu Dhabi, Motiram Bhusal, said that around 5,000 Nepalese are expected to turn up to benefit from the amnesty. Bangladesh Ambassador to the UAE, Mohammad Imran, said at least 2,000 Bangladeshis are also expected to avail of the amnesty. Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, Husin Bagis, said that the embassy is expecting 1,000 people to apply for amnesty. At the Pakistan Consulate in Dubai, press counsellor Ashique Hussain urged Pakistanis to "legalise their status or return home". The last amnesty given in the UAE in 2013 benefited nearly 62,000 illegal residents.
