UAE residents who travel abroad may face quarantine, checks when they return

  DUBAI – UAE residents who travel abroad may face quarantine and health checks at the airport when they return, the country’s health authority said as the number of people infected by the new coronavirus rose to more than 89,000 globally. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) issued the statement on Thursday (March 5), urging citizens and residents to avoid traveling abroad as the Covid-19 continued to spread to 68 countries. MoHAP said residents returning to the UAE from their trip abroad may face preventive measures, including a 14-day quarantine period and medical checks at the airport, if deemed necessary by concerned authorities. People who test positive for the virus will be transferred to a designated health facility for treatment and quarantine, the ministry said.

Cases in UAE

The total number of infected people in the UAE rose to 45 on Friday (March 6) after the Ministry of Health and Prevention announced 15 new cases of coronavirus in the country. Many of the 15 infected recently arrived from trips abroad. Thirteen of the new cases were diagnosed with the ministry's early monitoring system, while two were identified after the patients came into close contact with two UAE Tour members who tested positive for Coronavirus. In February, two Italian UAE Tour members had tested positive for Covid-19, infecting an initial six people. Authorities were forced to quarantine and test everyone involved in the cycling event, as well as order the lockdown of two hotels in Abu Dhabi where the participants stayed. Meanwhile, the ministry said that two more patients have recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of people cured in the UAE to seven. The two patients, both Chinese, were from the family identified as the first four cases in the UAE. The ministry said that all family members were free of coronavirus.

All schools to close

As part of the UAE' preventive measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, all schools and universities in the UAE will be closed for one month starting on March 8, according to the Ministry of Education. The ministry made the announcement on Tuesday, two days after nurseries across the country were ordered closed for 14 days in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. During the government-ordered shutdown, all nurseries, schools and universities and school buses will be sterilized, according to the ministry.

Mosques, school buses to be sterilized

Mosques, Quran centres, schools and school buses in the UAE will be sterilized as part of efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus, according to the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments and Ministry of Education in separate announcements.

Emirates bans travelers heading to Saudi Arabia

Dubai carrier Emirates airline last week announced that tourists from China, Philippines, Pakistan, India and 17 other countries are banned from boarding Emirates flights to Saudi Arabia over coronavirus fears. The airline said it will refuse boarding for passengers heading to Saudi Arabia on visit visa or on Umrah visa. The ban is in compliance with a Saudi government directive to contain the new coronavirus outbreak.
