The UAE has announced the suspension of new visas and temporary entry restrictions for nationals of three African countries as part of precautionary measures linked to developments involving the Ebola virus. In a joint announcement, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) said the measures are intended to strengthen national preparedness and protect public health. The restrictions apply to nationals of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Uganda and the Republic of South Sudan.

New UAE visa issuance suspended

Authorities said the issuance of all new visas, including visit visas, for nationals of the three countries was suspended from 1pm on Saturday (June 6). The suspension applies to all new visa categories and will remain in effect until further notice. Officials said the decision may be extended depending on developments and ongoing risk assessments. The UAE also announced that travellers arriving from the three listed countries will not be permitted entry into the country. The restrictions also apply to passengers travelling through one or more transit countries if they have recently been in the affected countries. However, travellers who have remained outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan for more than 21 consecutive days before arriving in the UAE will be exempt from the restriction. Authorities clarified that international transit flight operations will continue as normal and will not be affected by the new measures.

Cargo flights continue

While passenger-related restrictions have been introduced, cargo operations between the UAE and the three countries will continue without interruption. Officials said the measures form part of the UAE's proactive strategy to address potential health risks and maintain preparedness for emerging global developments. NCEMA and ICP said they will continue monitoring the Ebola situation in coordination with local and international partners. The authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to regularly assessing health risks and implementing additional measures when necessary, based on scientific evaluations, approved health standards and evolving circumstances.
