4 Covid-19 vaccines in UAE: official explains difference

  DUBAI – A UAE health official has explained the difference between four Covid-19 vaccines approved for use in the country: Sinopharm, Pfizer-BioNTech, Sputnik V, and AstraZeneca. Dr. Farida Al Hosani, official spokesperson for the UAE Health Sector, on Tuesday said the vaccines are similar in helping the body produce antibodies against coronavirus. “Many people focus on differences in vaccines and how they are manufactured and preserved. However, despite these differences, vaccines are similar in stimulating the body by producing antibodies, giving the necessary immunity in the event of exposure to the virus,” Dr. Al Hosani said. Dr. Al Hosani explained how each Covid-19 vaccine works:

Pfizer-BioNTech

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine use mRNA, a molecule that instructs the body to create a spike protein that sets off an immune response. In creating the vaccine, part of the virus’ gene code is injected into the body so it can produce the s-protein or spike of the virus, triggering an immune response.

Sinopharm

The Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine works by using a dead version of the virus. This exposes the body’s immune system to the virus, and stimulates the body to form antibodies without risking a reaction.

Sputnik V and AstraZeneca

The Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine and AstraZeneca, a vaccine jointly developed by drug maker AstraZeneca and Oxford University, are based on a viral vector. The vaccines use adenovirus, which is modified to include molecules of the emerging Covid-19 virus. This then helps the body produce antibodies. ICA/Expat Media
