Two dead on Dh119 million Chile airport heist

Two people were killed in a multimillion-dollar theft in Chile's largest airport, authorities confirmed on Wednesday (March 8). A shootout between robbers and officials from Chile's DGAC aviation agency was posted on social media. It took place at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport. According to officials, about ten individuals targeted an armored vehicle transporting a "valuable load" of a LATAM Airlines plane as they entered the airport in three or four trucks. The plane from Miami carried Dh119 million ($32.5 million) to be transported by security provider Brinks. Security personnel "foiled a robbery by a highly organized, highly armed and probably very well-planned robbery," said Spanish interior minister Manuel Monsalve. The robbers used "high capacity firepower" to steal the money, and no passengers were in danger throughout the encounter. Recent years have seen an increase in organized crime in Chile, including complex train robberies and multimillion-dollar crimes at the nation's largest harbor. KD/Expat Media
